The Frontship project is pleased to highlight two recent scientific publications from our partner, the University of Bolzano, which contribute directly to our shared mission of building a more sustainable and circular shipping sector in Europe.
-
Gasification of Wood Packaging Waste and Valorization of Char in Polymer Composites
This study explores the potential of wood packaging residues—currently treated as waste—to be transformed through thermochemical gasification into useful products such as fuels, heat, and by-products. The findings underline how waste valorization can reduce environmental impacts while generating new economic opportunities.

Renewable Heat Generation from Waste Gasification: Infrared thermal imaging and flue gas emissions monitoring of producer gas flame
The second article focuses on innovative methods to enhance energy efficiency in industrial processes, aiming to cut energy use and emissions without compromising performance. These approaches offer promising applications across logistics and maritime operations, where energy savings translate into both environmental and economic benefits.

Both studies underline a crucial message: waste streams and energy systems can be redesigned to serve as resources rather than burdens. By integrating advanced conversion processes and energy-efficient solutions, the shipping and logistics sectors can cut emissions, lower waste, and accelerate the transition to a circular, low-carbon economy.
These findings go beyond academic results — they provide concrete pathways to achieve Frontship’s ambition of fostering a more circular economy in Europe. By showing how waste can be turned into value and how processes can be made more energy-efficient, Uni Bolzano’s research:
-
Strengthens Europe’s capacity to close material loops in logistics and shipping;
-
Supports the EU Green Deal objectives of reducing emissions and resource dependence;
-
Encourages innovation for greener ports and maritime value chains;
-
Demonstrates how collaborative research can drive the systemic change needed for sustainable transport.
These publications enrich the scientific backbone of Frontship and help position Europe at the forefront of sustainable maritime innovation.
We congratulate our partners at the University of Bolzano for these important contributions!
