Circular Economy in the Agri-Food and Feed sector in Norte Region – Portugal

On February 27, 2025, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Braga will host a seminar entitled “Circular Economy in the Agri-Food Sector in the Norte Region: Challenges of Valorization for Food and Feed”. This event is organized by CCDR-Norte and INL, in collaboration with PortugalFoods, under the framework of the Frontsh1p project.

Driving Circular Innovation in Agri-Food in the Norte Region
Following the bottom-up approach used in the project, in 2024, CCDR-Norte and INL organized two workshops for CSS2 – Food & Feed with stakeholders from the supply value chain to be able to assess the barriers perceived by the participants to implement circular economy in their sector.

These workshops were attended by early-adopters and actors with prior interest in the subject of green transition and circular economy. In these workshops, the stakeholders were asked to reflect on the barriers for the implementation of a circular economy among four categories of challenges: 1. Legal Framework; 2. Innovation, product design and the value chain; 3. Infrastructure, investment, entrepreneurship; 4. Social inclusion, awareness and knowledge.

It was clear then that the Norte region’s stakeholders wanted to continue the debate on the valorization of by-products, to discuss regulatory obstacles, the processes involved and reflect on solutions. Therefore, this seminar comes up as an opportunity to further engage in this debate.

Key Topics and Agenda Highlights
The event will bring together experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to discuss:

  • Regulatory and legislative frameworks for waste valorization in the agri-food sector;
  • Best practices and technological innovations for circularity in food and feed;
  • Synergies between academia and industry for the valorization of by-products in different industries;
  • Innovation and investment opportunities in agri-food by-product valorization.

The agenda includes panel discussions, case studies, and a roundtable to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the valorization of agri-food by-products.
